They’re particularly important to democracy because they: - Enable direct participation – Anyone can join, regardless of financial resources, making political activism accessible - Build community and momentum – They create solidarity among supporters and can energize campaigns through collective action - Increase visibility – In an era dominated by digital echo chambers, they put political messages directly in front of diverse audiences who might not see them online - Humanize politics – Seeing neighbors advocate in person makes political engagement feel more real and local than algorithmic feeds Signs of Fascism was developed by Port Townsend (WA) Indivisible. WDDP plans to bring this initiative to Wisconsin.

Citizens are organizing to hold signs that simply and clearly state some known indicators of fascist state activities from the 1930s to the current moment. The purpose of these actions is simple - to alert our fellow citizens, residents, motorists and passers-by about the seriousness of the moment and to spur them to action. Join us on the fourth Tuesday of every month for our evening rush hour protest on the west side of Madison.

We've got the signs, so all you have to do is just show up on the scheduled date and time to the specific location.

The midterms are coming, September's gathering will feature representatives from organizations that recruit and train election volunteers, with the goal of signing people up on the spot. Before election day, there is the work of building turnout. Voter registration drives bring new people into the process. Phone banking, texting, and canvassing put volunteers in direct contact with voters. Postcards to voters have become a surprisingly effective low-barrier way to participate. On election day itself, there are roles for every comfort level and skill set. Poll workers staff the voting sites and keep the process running. Election observers (both nonpartisan and partisan) monitor the process and document what they see. Poll drivers get voters who otherwise couldn't make it to the polls. Hotline workers field calls from voters and poll workers who run into problems. Translators ensure that language is never a barrier to casting a ballot. The outcome in November will be determined by the work of volunteers like you in this community. This September, let's lay the groundwork for action.

### Calling Poets and Poetry Lovers! The personal is political is poetic. Join Western Dane Democracy Project members on Friday, August 28th, at 6:30 at Fitchburg Barriques for an informal, sitting-around-the-table, poetry share-out. Come prepared to share 2-3 poems that you wrote or by other poets that resonate with you. All themes and ability levels welcome. Participating poets can let the group know whether they want feedback or just attentive listening. This is a low-pressure opportunity to celebrate an important form of self-expression! This event is open to the public.
