Right now, with concerns about social media polarization, misinformation, and democratic participation, sign brigades represent an old-fashioned but powerful way for ordinary citizens to make their voices heard in public space—reminding people that democracy happens in communities, not just online. They’re particularly important to democracy because they: - Enable direct participation – Anyone can join, regardless of financial resources, making political activism accessible - Build community and momentum – They create solidarity among supporters and can energize campaigns through collective action - Increase visibility – In an era dominated by digital echo chambers, they put political messages directly in front of diverse audiences who might not see them online - Humanize politics – Seeing neighbors advocate in person makes political engagement feel more real and local than algorithmic feeds Signs of Fascism was developed by Port Townsend (WA) Indivisible. WDDP plans to bring this initiative to Wisconsin.

Citizens are organizing to hold signs that simply and clearly state some known indicators of fascist state activities from the 1930s to the current moment. The purpose of these actions is simple - to alert our fellow citizens, residents, motorists and passers-by about the seriousness of the moment and to spur them to action. Join us on the fourth Tuesday of every month for our evening rush hour protest on the west side of Madison. NOTE: Through the November 3 election, Signs of Fascism events will focus on gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany's voting record and his alignment with President Trump.

### Calling Poets and Poetry Lovers! The personal is political is poetic. Join Western Dane Democracy Project members on Friday, September 25, at 6:30 at Fitchburg Barriques for an informal, sitting-around-the-table, poetry share-out. Come prepared to share 2-3 poems that you wrote or by other poets that resonate with you. For those who want a writing prompt: try writing a prose poem. (What makes it bad?) All themes and ability levels welcome. Participating poets can let the group know whether they want feedback or just attentive listening. Join WDDP for a high traffic canvassing event at a Badgers home game on Saturday, October 24, 2026! What: High traffic canvassing is when we go to where the people are, engaging voters in public spaces. Why: We are able to share our pro-democracy message with a lot of people in a short time. We plan to encourage folx to make a plan to vote, to vote early, and to vot no on the three ballot measures. How: We'll provide conversation openers and information, including pro-demcocracy stickers, GOTV business cards, and informational flyers. We also will provide tips on how to approach everyday Wisconsinites. You can canvas on your own or with a partner. Where: We will meet at a location near the UW campus, then fan out to where Badger fans are gathered--the grounds of Camp Randall, Library Mall, Alumni Park, State St., etc. The exact time and location will be shared with those who sign up. When: Saturday, October 24, 2026. Time TBD (once game time is announced).

Tom Tiffany, the Republican from northern Wisconsin who is running for governor in the Nov. 3 election, has consistently supported President Donald Trump since Trump began his second term in January 2025. In fact, his voting record is aligned with Trump 93% to 99% of the the time. A vote for Tiffany is a vote for Trump.  Join us at an upcoming banner brigade to let Wisconsinites know that Tom Tiffany is in lock step with Donald Trump, and he is too extreme for Wisconsin.
